In recent years, when the question of just who is the best footballer in the world was raised, most would answer Lionel Messi without even a second's hesitation.
However, now the answer is not so clear. Messi remains as outstanding as ever, yes, but it is difficult not think that a certain Cristiano Ronaldo has significantly closed that gap with a period of quite sensational form over 2013 and into the new year.
The 29-year-old, who joined current employers Real Madrid after departing Manchester United and Old Trafford back in 2009, has really been on top of his game.
Combining his unbelievable pace, brute force and mesmerising trickery, the Portuguese international notched an incredible 62 goals in all competitions last season and already has 22 in just 21 La Liga appearances during the 2013/14 campaign as Carlo Ancelotti's side look well-positioned to mount a serious bid for title glory and perhaps even end the painful pursuit of 'La Decima'.
Watch footage - and we unreservedly apologise for the corny dance track in the background - of some of Ronaldo's best goals and skills of the season so far above. A hat tip to 101 Great Goals for bringing it to our attention...
