Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has offered an apology to his family and his club on Twitter, seemingly an admission that he had an affair with a model despite initially denying the reports when pressed by his employers.
The Sun on Sunday published claims a week ago that Giroud had invited Celia Kay to his hotel room at the Four Seasons in Canary Wharf, where he was staying with his team, the night before Arsenal played Crystal Palace.
Giroud and his representatives are reported to have dismissed the claim from the American model when Arsenal questioned him, with the incident a breach of club discipline that could mean a fine £230,000.
A further story from the same newspaper was published seven days later, showing what it claims to be a picture taken by Miss Kay of Giroud in his underpants while they were together on the night in question.
It would appear there was truth in the assertion after all as Giroud, who is married, tweeted on Sunday afternoon - just an hour before Arsenal were due to play Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium - to apologise for the incident.
Giroud said: “I apologise to my wife, family and friends and my manager, team-mates and Arsenal fans.
“I now have to fight for my family and for my club and obtain their forgiveness. Nothing else matters at the moment.”
