Floyd Mayweather's opponents still playing guessing game

Amir Khan's hopes of being chosen to face Floyd Mayweather on May 3rd have received a boost over the last 24 hours, with his main rival for the mega-money payday Marcos Maidana insisting that he has not yet signed an official agreement for the rumoured Las Vegas showdown.

Mayweather has take his sweet time in choosing an opponent for his first bout of 2014, with Khan and Maidana the only two viable contenders given the continued and frustrating circumstances surrounding any chance of a pound-for-pound showdown with Manny Pacquaio.

Khan is still considered the favourite to secure a shot at glory in Nevada later this year, a stance helped by an official statement released by Maidana on his Facebook page last night.

The Argentine scrapper decided to try and silence continued speculation by sharing that a deal with Mayweather is some way from being agreed, although he did declare that he still definitely wants the slot, sooner rather than later.

Maidana's camp posted a statement last night, which read: "Considering that rumours have been circulating in the last few hours addressing a 'done deal' fight between WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana and WBC champ Floyd Mayweather we want to clarify that those versions are not accurate.

"Maidana is well aware that he is indeed a firm candidate to face Mayweather next May 3 but the fight is far from being made or confirmed as other fighters are still also in the mix.

"Hopefully we will have news in the next few days but in the meantime we don't want to confuse the fans or the boxing press. Maidana of course wants to unify titles with Mayweather but for now we will have to wait."

Both men are expected to learn who has landed a fight with the welterweight and light middleweight king imminently, although one man will be left disappointed after a long, drawn out negotiation process.
