Man United website overlooks unhappy star as potential captain

Manchester United's official website have increased speculation that Robin van Persie could leave Old Trafford in the summer after omitting the former Arsenal skipper from a published feature of five potential captains.

It has been widely reported in recent weeks that Van Persie, 30, is unhappy under the management of David Moyes.

And the Netherlands international has subsequently been linked with a shock return to Arsenal this summer.

Van Persie captained the Gunners for one season before he was lured to Old Trafford by Sir Alex Ferguson in August 2012.

But, despite his previous experience as a Premier League club captain, United's official website do not class the prolific striker as a "top candidate" to succeed the outgoing Nemanja Vidic.

Wayne Rooney, who is expected to put pen-to-paper on a new contract, is included in the top five, as are Darren Fletcher, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and even David de Gea.

Whether Van Persie will still be a Manchester United player for the start of the 2014/15 campaign remains to be seen.
