Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric found himself at the centre of another deliberate booking storm this weekend after seemingly diving to make an intentional handball on the halfway line of Sunday's La Liga clash against Getafe.
The Croatian international went straight into the referees book following the calculated free-kick, and as a result will be banned for the clash against lowly Elche at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.
Modric's timely suspension will see him rested for the winnable match, and return to first-team action with the slate of previous misdemeanours wiped clean for the top of the table clash against Atletico Madrid in two weeks' time.
It raises questions as to whether the 28-year-old playmaker was purposely penalised, given the manner of his otherwise innocuous booking in the middle of the park.
Moments earlier, the former Tottenham star had given Real Madrid a 3-0 lead over Getafe, but was quickly hauled off after his Superman style handball, presumably in order to avoid any further reprimand.
Carlo Ancelotti was staunch in his defence when asked if he'd instructed players to pick up yellow cards, denying that any underhand tactics were in play, even after Modric's moment of madness.
"I never ask them to take cards," said the Italian. "I never ask them to deliberately get a card because sometimes it can be red instead of yellow."
