LA Lakers Pau Gasol could be on his way to the Phoenix Suns before Thursday's January 20th deadline.

It may seem like a bizarre move by the Suns considering the sheer size of Gasol's contract, which is $19 million.

However, it seems that the Suns may be in the best position to broker a deal. This is because the Lakers want draft picks and Phoenix have plenty.

LA are not looking to add salary before next season, with their main focus being the capture of new ball players through the NBA Draft.

SportingNews believes the Suns can make the Lakers the best offer for Gasol.

"Phoenix does not want to bring in four rookies next season, though, and would be willing to make a move. Because Gasol has a $19 million contract, it is difficult to match up his salary in such a way that the Lakers would not add future salary.

"The Suns are in position to make the best (if not only) offer to the Lakers, so look for the sides to come back to the table.

"If the Lakers were willing to take on salary moving forward, they’ve have a much bigger market available to trade Gasol. However, because they’re not, there are only a few large expiring contracts available in the market – even less with any youth/draft picks that could be attached."

Gasol, however, has previously stated he does not want to leave California.

"My preference would be to stay. That's what I've been saying all year, though the circumstances are difficult right now for our team and nobody's too happy. But it's still my team and I still want to be here," he said last week
