Referee headbutts player in Brazilian derby clash

Published Add your comment

I'm sure you have often looked at the melee of shouting players that surround a referee after any given decision - controversial or otherwise - and wondered, just how does the man in the middle manage to keep his cool in the face of such ugly provocation?

While this particular incident does not involve a player obnoxiously screaming in protest and indeed looks like a complete accident, referees across the globe can be forgiven for perhaps allowing a wry smirk to flash across their faces upon viewing.

During a recent derby clash between Sao Paulo rivals Palmeiras and Corinthinas, Chilean international Jorge Valdivia was sent crashing to the turf in some discomfort after the referee planted an accidental headbutt on the unfortunate and unsuspecting midfielder.

The match finished all square at 1-1, with Romarinho giving Corinthinas shortly after the hour mark and on-loan Benfica man Alan Kardec grabbed the equaliser late on.

Watch video footage of the headbutt above, with thanks to 101 Great Goals and Goal for bringing the incident to our attention.
