Liverpool miss out on Atletico target

Liverpool have been dealt a transfer blow in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid midfielder Raul Garcia.

The 27-year-old has signed a new four-and-a-half year deal at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, tying him to the club until the summer of 2018.

Garcia first joined Atletico in 2007, moving to the capital from Osasuna before returning to El Sadar on loan for the 2011/12 season.

However, he returned to his parent club for the following campaign, and has impressed with both his creativity and goals behind the striker. This season promises to be his best under Diego Simeone, with six goals in 16 La Liga games to-date.

It's form that alerted Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to his availability, according to talkSPORT, but the Premier League outfit will now need to take their search elsewhere.

The Reds have impressed in the Premier League this season, and are legitimate title challengers for the first time in years - just four points off top spot with 12 games left in the campaign.

Garcia's arrival would have added some strength-in-depth next season for Liverpool ahead of a potential European campaign at Anfield, but the club will now need to look elsewhere.
