Thomas Vermaelen's agent, Alex Kroes, has told French paper Le 10 Sport, that he is ready to leave Arsenal this summer.
With a lack of first team football this season, Vermaelen will end his five-year association with the club.
The World Cup is fast approaching and due to lack of time to shine, the 28-year-old is questioning his chances of making it into the Belgian first team.
Vermaelen is described as a very big character in the dressing room and is very experienced and passionate about the club. However, this is not enough and with only three league starts this season, he wants to leave.
Due to outstanding performances from arguably the best defensive partnership in the league, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker are the starting centre-backs for the Gunners.
Up until 8th February 2014, this defensive partnership had not lost a Premier League fixture where the duo had played full 90 minutes since January 2012. This strong partnership leaves no place for Vermaelen, as he is left as a back-up centre-back.
Arsene Wenger says he is 'open' to extending Vermaelen's contract at the end of the season. He said "“I am ready to extend his contract. We want Thomas Vermaelen to be happy and have the number of games a player of his class deserves."
Although, with strong links to big clubs such as Inter Milan and Napoli, the Belgian seems confident that his career with Arsenal may be coming to an end.
