The Undertaker has made a career of not losing at WrestleMania; and the question arises whether 'The Deadman' will ever lost at the prestigious event.
Currently at 21-0 The Undertaker has beaten every single challenger who has attempted to dethrone The Phenom, an impressive list of superstars have come and gone yet The Undertaker remains unbeaten.
Jimmy Snuka, Diesel, Ric Flair, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Kane and most recently CM Punk have all pushed The Undertaker to the limit yet came up short. So, will The Undertaker ever lose at WrestleMania? That question is one which can only be answered once or if the situation actually occurs.
WrestleMania XXX could see The Undertaker take on Brock Lesnar, whilst WrestleMania 31 could see a potential bout between The Deadman and The Icon, Sting.
Something wrestling fans have been eagerly awaiting for. It is no secret that The Undertaker’s career is coming to an end soon, but which superstars on the active roster could face The Undertaker at a WrestleMania? Who deserves the honour of going one-on-one with the legend at the event and who can put on a great match with an ageing superstar?
In this article I have picked out my five top WWE superstars who could face The Undertaker at a WrestleMania event.
Honourable mention – Sting
It would be a waste of a pick if I picked Sting in the top five, he is already rumoured to be facing The Undertaker and for the sake of this article, he doesn’t qualify as he is not an active WWE superstar. If this didn’t apply, then Sting would definitely be the number one pick for hundreds of WWE fans.
5 – Roman Reigns
One of the biggest and best breakout stars the WWE has seen in a number of years. Roman Reigns was seen as the outcast once The SHIELD made their main roster debut as all eyes were on Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, who were tipped to take the WWE by storm.
And they have, the only difference is that Roman Reigns has made a bigger impact than both, a brilliant dilemma for the WWE to be in right now. Roman Reigns is teetering on the verge of a face-turn which could occur as early as this Sunday’s Elimination Chamber event when The SHIELD take on The Wyatt Family in an eagerly anticipated six-man tag team match.
The Undertaker has history of getting over youngsters, he asked for a one-on-one match with Dean Ambrose as he was impressed with him, and many years ago The Undertaker even wanted Randy Orton and Kurt Angle to end the streak, and more recently CM Punk.
Roman Reigns is the next big thing in the WWE; there is no denying that. With The SHIELD he has been involved in some high-profile feuds and he has gained experience and has become a fantastic wrestler in such a short space of time. What better way for Roman Reigns to become the ultimate face of the WWE and taking that gigantic leap up to stardom by going up against The Undertaker, one man at the start of his career who is destined for great things, up against a man who has achieved everything that is possible to achieve; passing the torch to a man who has established himself as someone who is capable and reliable of competing at the top level.
4 – Daniel Bryan
Towards WrestleMania season the rumour mill begins to circulate, and the biggest rumour is always surrounding The Undertaker and his potential opponent at WrestleMania and this year was no different.
Just over a month ago rumours suggested that Daniel Bryan would be the man challenging The Undertaker’s streak, where The Undertaker would play a heel and make this potential storyline very interesting. Daniel Bryan has had the best year of his career, he has the fans and the media at his feet. What better time to challenge The Undertaker? The superstar every single WWE fan loves and adores.
This feud can still happen, obviously it all depends on The Undertaker’s health but if it ever does happen both of these man can execute it to perfection. During his time in the WWE Daniel Bryan has always had the underdog status hanging above his head but has always fought it off by defeating big names, and what bigger name than The Undertaker; today Bryan would be the name at the top of the list of who stands a genuine chance of beating The Undertaker.
The Undertaker as a heel, wanting to end this new superstar who the fans love, a situation The Undertaker has been in for over 20 years. He will go up against the new breed, Daniel Bryan with the fans behind him wanting to become the first man to end the streak after years of being put down by everyone. It can happen, and it can be executed perfectly.
3 – Kane
The Undertaker has already faced Kane twice and beaten his ‘brother’ on both occasions. Nothing is stopping both men from going at it one more time, one final time. A lot of people have said that if anybody really deserves to end The Undertaker’s streak, if it ever will end then it deserves to be Kane. A dedicated worker who has flourished in his role as Kane over the years and has done some of his best work alongside The Undertaker.
Kane was The Undertaker’s seventh victim and then his 12th at WrestleMania XX; ten years ago. What better place than to meet again down the line ten years later, especially with the current gimmick Kane is donning.
It would be the perfect setting, The Undertaker returning to put his corporate brother back into his place. Cast your mind back towards the 2003 Survivor Series pay-per-view when The Undertaker took on Vince McMahon in a Buried Alive match; Kane interfered to bury The Undertaker and his reason for doing so was because The Undertaker was not the same monster he was earlier in his career; and now we know The Undertaker returned at WrestleMania XX as the same monster.
Now The Undertaker can turn the tables on his brother, facing off against Kane because he has gone corporate, and he is not the monster anymore. It makes perfect sense but who knows whether they will ever face off again.
2 – Bray Wyatt
Another young superstar in the top five and this time it comes in the form of Bray Wyatt. He is in a similar situation to Roman Reigns, in terms of being somebody who is capable of competing at the top level and has proved in a short amount of time. His cult leader gimmick seems as if it is just tailor-made for somebody such as The Undertaker, and it will be up to The Undertaker to bring Bray and his family down.
The devil has made Bray Wyatt do it all, maybe his next mission will be to finish The Undertaker once and for all. You can just imagine how the feud and the promos will pan out between both men, The Undertaker’s persona is creepy in itself so imagine the level of creepiness when you insert Bray Wyatt into the equation? It will be weirdly entertaining for the fans and could even divide opinion on who the fans want to support, The Undertaker has carried the WWE during his best days and it could be time for Bray Wyatt to bring the machine down once and for all.
1 – John Cena
The biggest name who hasn’t had the opportunity to face off against The Undertaker but fully deserves a shot at The Undertaker is John Cena. Love him or hate him the man is a workhorse and if anybody deserves a shot at the streak then John Cena should be at the front of the queue.
John Cena will definitely be the biggest victim of The Undertaker’s because of the reputation he has built by becoming and remaining the face of the WWE for many years. He is the biggest threat to the streak and a match with John Cena will just feel like a WrestleMania match, and will sell more than a potential Brock Lesnar versus The Undertaker match.
Legends such as The Undertaker deserve to go out on top with a brilliant match and a bout against John Cena could be just that. Cena manages to get a reaction out of everyone, no matter what you think of him every WWE fan has an opinion on him, and would probably be the only superstar to create that little bit of doubt into the back of a fans mind, that he is capable of beating The Undertaker and the build-up along with the match itself could have the fans on the edge of their seats.
