Michael Sam will most likely be the first openly gay player to play in the NFL if he is drafted in May, but do the recent charges on former player Darren Sharper highlight the NFL's continuing problems with sex and sexuality?

Sharper has been accused of raping seven women in four different states, and he is has been charged for two of them.

Not only that, he has been accused of drugging the women beforehand, but how does this all relate to Sam and him coming out?

Well, essentially the NFL clearly still has an underlying problems with sex and sexuality, and only when that's sorted will a gay player be truly accepted across the league.

Even though the actions of Sharper are the actions of one human being, there's a common feeling that the NFL still has environments where violence towards women and homophobic language are still tolerated.

Emily Bazelon, the Slate senior editor, delved into this further in a recent blog post.

"I know that most football players are decent human beings. And there’s plenty of love in the locker room culture," she wrote.

"If he’s guilty, his conviction and sentencing, however justified, won’t be enough. Advocates like Katherine Redmond Brown, founder of the National Coalition Against Violent Athletes, have been pushing for decades for the sport to address the problem of violence toward women head on."

She then went further and related the poor treatment of women to anti-gay abuse.

"The anti-gay mockery and touching is another piece of the same sad puzzle. The NFL, and the NCAA too, have a chance to lead here. So far, though, they seem content to just sit and nurse the bruises from headline after headline."
