One of the highlights of the annual golf calendar, the WGC - Accenture Match Play, got underway yesterday at Dove Mountain, and we already have our first big upset... Ian Poulter, the 2010 winner and Mr Matchplay himself, was knocked out in Round 1 by Rickie Fowler.
But the Englishman was graceful in defeat congratulating the Californian, before his day got even worse - his beloved Arsenal also suffering a loss. Fowler had missed the cut in his previous 3 tournaments this season, and by his own admission had made Poults the favourite beforehand. Well, the 25-year-old celebrated yesterday afternoon by taking in the stunning Arizona surroundings with his Mum and sister.
Next up, Rickie has the unenviable task of taking on the hottest player of the moment - Jimmy Walker, who thrashed Branden Grace 5&4. It took Sergio Garcia 22 holes to successfully fight back in his Round 1 clash with Marc Leishman - and the Spaniard’s now looking ahead to his match-up with Bill Haas.
Absent from Twitter for almost two years, El Nino seems to be back to his tweeting best - now total ling a whopping 106 tweets in four years! That’s all for today but we’ll be back tomorrow with more WGC updates, in the meantime you can get in touch with Golfing World on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #GWTV.
