Manchester United are planning to spend big on Eliaquim Mangala this summer after watching the highly-rated FC Porto centre-back in action again during last night’s Europa League match against Frankfurt, according to the Mail Online.

United boss David Moyes sent scouts to watch the France international - who is valued at £35m - and, following another impressive defensive display, the Red Devils are now prepared to fight tooth and nail with rivals Manchester City to sign the 23-year-old.

Moyes is desperate to secure the services of a top-class central defender with club captain Nemanja Vidic poised to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Mangala is regarded as an ideal replacement for the Serie A-bound Vidic, but Manchester City remain keen to add him to their ranks following a failed bid to bring him to the Etihad Stadium last month.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini attempted to sign Mangala and his current teammate Fernando in a dramatic deadline-day double swoop; however, the audacious move failed to materialise, which appears to have allowed Manchester United back into the race.

Is Mangala the perfect Vidic replacement for United? Should the centre-back join City instead?
