Man United & Arsenal to battle it out to sign £25m midfielder

Arsenal have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Borussia Dorrtmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, according to the Daily Mail

Manchester United have been linked with Gundogan for some time now and were thought to be confident of landing the 23-year-old Germany international.

However the Red Devils hopes of having a clear run on attempting to sign Gundogan - following news that Real Madrid have pulled out of the race to sign the Bundesliga star - appear to be dashed as Arsene Wenger is keen on landing the midfielder.

Gundogan, who is valued at £25million, has not played since August as he injured his back on the opening day of the Bundesliga season.

Real Madrid have reportedly turned their attention away from Gundogan due to the fact that he has been out for the majority of the season, however Manchester United remain keen on bringing the Dortmund star to Old Trafford.

Gundogan's current deal at Dortmund runs out at the end of the 2014/15 season so Jurgen Klopp will have to decide in the summer whether to cash in on the midfielder or risk losing him for free in 2015.

Dortmund could drive the price up now that Arsenal have identified Gundogan as a potential summer target as both Premier League clubs will be desperate to sign the former Nürnberg ace.
