Chelsea have failed in their efforts to sign summer target Blaise Matuidi at the end of the season, as he has already signed a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain, according to French newspaper Le 10 Sport.

The source, backed up by Simone Rivera, a journalist who has strong ties with Paris Saint-Germain, claims that the wheels are already in motion for Matuidi to confirm the new deal at his current club, and that PSG have definitively moved to retain his services.

The 26-year-old has been on Chelsea’s radar for some time now, with Jose Mourinho said to have been impressed with the form his has showed for the Ligue 1 leaders.

Initial speculation had suggested that the France international would be leaving the Parc des Prince this summer, with heavy competition for first-team places sometimes limiting opportunities.

However Rivera believes that PSG want to keep Matuidi on their books, and that a new deal is virtually all but finalised.

If this happens then it may spell the end of Chelsea’s ambitions to bring the player to the Premier League, though Mourinho will likely try to sign him if there is any remaining doubt over his future by the time the summer transfer window rolls around.
