Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen is firm in the belief that the club’s goalkeeper David de Gea will soon establish himself as the world’s most accomplished player in his position.
De Gea was a £17.8 million acquisition from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011 and, after an inconsistent start, has marked himself as arguably the best goalkeeper in the Premier League at present.
Still aged only 23, De Gea has room to flourish even further and Owen has expressed his opinion that the Spaniard is capable of surpassing all others, despite the doubts that were initially raised during the early stages of his Old Trafford career.
“I said that on here years ago when everyone was hammering him,” Owen posted on Twitter after a fan had suggested De Gea is not far off the talents of Bayern Munich and Germany No.1 Manuel Neuer.
De Gea has started all but one game for Manchester United in the Premier League this season, dispelling any doubts that he could be ousted by Anders Lindegaard as David Moyes’ first choice.
