In the WWE there are only a handful of dream matches the fans want to see, and some are quite close to happening, but when it comes to the WWE; business comes first.

The WWE wouldn’t just put on a singles match between two fan favourites because we want to see it, it will only happen if there is big money involved.

Whether this comes from merchandise sales or ticket sales in general, if they think it is not appealing then the match will not happen and it is as simple as that.

Examples include Sting taking on The Undertaker; probably not one of the best wrestling matches but you can imagine the money involved in that type of match. Even CM Punk taking on Daniel Bryan will be very successful inside the ring and on the financial side of things too.

Moving away from these matches which could still happen, what dream matches would result in the most money being earned? In this article I take a look at the top five money drawing matches; take a look and see if you agree.

5 – John Cena vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin

Many would believe Hulk Hogan vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin would belong on this list but the match’s possibility of happening faded away years ago, with extensive injury history for both men neither could carry the other in a main event match. Understandably John Cena taking on Stone Cold probably isn’t likely either but definitely a lot likelier than Hogan.

Anyway, if Austin cannot get Hogan in the ring then why not take on the modern day Hulk Hogan in John Cena? The key aspect of this dream match is that they are both face as they each defined their era. Austin shined in The Attitude Era, reckless and unorthodox whilst Cena has dominated the family friendly PG era whom children adore, total opposites colliding.

Money will not be an issue, Austin: 316 shirt sales speak for themselves as do the ever-changing colours of John Cena’s shirts so money is to be made from this match. This match would easily break certain records as both men from each era step into the ring to show which era and whose values overrule the others.

4 – The Rock vs. Shawn Michaels

These two men have never squared off inside the ring which is a real shame despite them both working at the same time. This is a match fans have been dreaming about for years and years and will go down as one of the dream matches the fans want to see; and it will make big money too.

The most electrifying man in sports entertainment taking on the showstopper; what could possibly go wrong? Both brilliant performers and charismatic, any feud between the two would be entertaining in the ring and even better on the microphone and the fans will be split 50-50.

Shirt sales will be through the roof and even the older audiences that turned away from the WWE would return to see these two legends face off in an epic showdown at WrestleMania.

3 – The Undertaker vs. John Cena

The Undertaker has made his name by not losing at WrestleMania and currently that streak stands at 21-0, what makes his WrestleMania appearances even more special is the fact that The Undertaker always faces a threat and there has to be genuine belief that the streak could end, and whom better to be the threat than John Cena.

It is surprising to see that the WWE have not pitched these two men together as of yet, both draw audiences and the WWE would laugh as the money rolls in.

The WWE always crown John Cena with a big achievement and don’t hide it, the biggest achievement would be ending the streak and right now Cena looks like the biggest threat.

The young Cena followers would be supporting the leader of the CeNation whilst the elder following would be showing their full support for the legend they grew up watching. Love him or hate him John Cena is a workhorse and would get a brilliant match out of The Undertaker, entertaining for us and profitable for the business. He is Super Cena after all.

2 – CM Punk vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin

If I was biased I would put this match at number one, this is the match I want to see mainly because I believe Stone Cold Steve Austin is the greatest of all time but in terms of drawing money, I feel a Punk – Austin match would fall short to the number one match.

CM Punk has grown over the last couple of years as a superstar and continues to gain fans for his outspoken nature and the fans love that he sticks up for what he believes in. Some may argue he may not have the star appeal of your Hulk Hogan’s and your John Cena’s but Punk has been proving them all wrong, his value continues to increase let’s just hope he returns to the company.

This would be the perfect match for the WWE to make the most money, everybody loves a rebel but here we have two from different eras going one-on-one. Both have feuded with the boss whilst Austin may have taken it up a notch, Punk has certainly done himself no harm giving himself the rebel tag but the fans love it.

The straight edge superstar facing off with beer-swilling Austin would have fans queuing up to watch this bout between strikingly similar men with different beliefs.

1 – Hulk Hogan vs. John Cena

This is the match that would smash all box-office records whether we like it or not. Cena may get on the fans nerves but there is no denying he does what he is asked. He is a modern day Hulk Hogan and the biggest match would be to face off against the man people compare him to - The Hulkster.

They are both faces of their respective generations, they are role models and gain a massive following with the audience, they have a connection with the audience like nobody else and they definitely know how to keep the crowd entertained.

Hulk Hogan in his prime taking on John Cena would have the world's eyes watching, much like The Rock and John Cena did at their WrestleMania matches, fans that haven’t watched wrestling in years would come back to watch this one-time epic spectacle.

Credit does go to their level of competition too, superstars such as Roddy Piper and CM Punk have helped Hogan and Cena elevate themselves and set their standards higher and definitely persevered through their respective eras.

I have no doubt in my mind that although this may not be the best wrestling match it would certainly have people talking and watching, people talking and watching results in a lot of money being made.
