Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata believes that Wayne Rooney is worth every penny of his new blockbuster £300,000-a-week contract, writing in his latest Grada 360 blog that he is delighted that he will get the chance to play alongside the star striker at Old Trafford for years to come.

Rooney penned a fresh five-and-half year deal with United last Friday, before celebrating that contract news by scoring the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace just 24 hours later.

Mata also played his part in that important victory for the Red Devils and believes that Rooney's commitment to the club can only be positive for all concerned, insisting that the England international serves as an important example to the rest of the team moving forward.

The Spaniard said: "The [Palace] game was special for Rooney after his recent renewal, and he was very happy.

"He deserves it; he is a model player in this club and it’s a privilege to have him with us now and in the coming years."

Rooney, Mata, Robin van Persie and Adnan Januzaj all started together for the first time at Selhurst Park, but that exciting attacking quartet will be unable to continue building their understanding in Tuesday's Champions League tie against Olympiakos.

Mata is cup-tied in Europe this season after playing in the Champions League group stages for Chelsea, but Rooney is fit and raring to lead the line for United in Athens as they bid to take control of the last-16 tie against the Greek champions.
