The harsh reality of a footballer’s career is that not everyone is able to play at the highest level for very long.
Sure, ten years at the top, earning upwards of £100,000-a-week, isn’t something to be scoffed at but, for the most part, players like Ryan Giggs and Paulo Maldini, able to keep going into their 40s are an extremely rare commodity.
Put simply, athletes don’t age like fine wine. The decline of natural abilities and the ever-increasing pace of the modern game mean that once a player is a past his peak, he rarely goes on to achieve much more than he already has.
Of course there are exceptions, such as the two mentioned above, but there’s plenty of stars who would be better served hanging up their boots before they hit the decline….
