Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer has confirmed he is on the lookout for a new quarterback.
The Vikings, who hold the 8th overall pick in the draft, still have Christian Ponder on their roster, but that hasn't stopped Zimmer heading to Indianapolis to check out the NFL scouting combine this weekend.
Zimmer says that, aside from Ponder, and Matt Cassel and Josh Freeman who are entering free agency, he is looking to the free market and the draft for a new QB.
"We are going to get some quarterbacks; obviously those two guys (Matt Cassell and Josh Freeman) are free agents and Ponder is still on the roster," he said.
"But we have to have a quarterback, so we are going to have to find some, and that is why we are out here looking so hard and why we'll continue to look in free agency. We'll find a guy."
The situation is an awkward one for Ponder, who Zimmer inherited when he took over at Minnesota.
According to reports, Cassel's agent is due to meet with the Vikings about potentially signing on for another season as backup.
Ponder meanwhile also looks likely to stay if general manager Rick Spielman's comments are anything to go by.
"He will be here," said Spielman, who added that the team's goal was to add another young quarterback to their roster.
Given their draft ranking however, they are in danger of missing out on the cream of the crop, prompting Spielman to say when quizzed if their first pick will be a quarterback: "It's not going to be a forced issue".
