Former Indianapolis Colts GM, Bill Polian has told ESPN's NFL insiders that he projects Jimmy Garoppolo as a first round pick in this year's NFL draft.

Adam Schefter revealed the news on twitter earlier today: "Former Colts GM Bill Polian just said on ESPN's NFL Insiders that he projects Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo to be a first-round pick.

The quarterback from Eastern Illinois threw for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns last season but has not been mentioned among the top quarterbacks in the draft.

Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, UCF's Blake Bortles and Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater are all expected to be drafted high but other signal callers in the draft are not considered to be at the level required for first round selections.

Bill Polian was general manager of the Colts between 1997 and 2011. It was he who selected Peyton Manning first overall in the 1998 draft and turned the Colts into a Super Bowl winning team by building through the draft.

He was fired in 2011 after the Colts had a 2-11 season without the injured Manning. The year after Polian was fired, the Colts selected Andrew Luck first overall in the 2012 draft.

Garoppolo has impressed many scouts this season as a virtual unknown for an FCS team to an extremely draft-able quarterback.

He won the Walter Payton award for the most outstanding offensive player in the FCS. He also impressed with performances in the East-West Shrine game and the Senior Bowl.
