Stewart Downing to Arsenal

This is a story some Arsenal fans still refuse to believe, but the north London club very nearly signed Stewart Downing from Aston Villa in the summer transfer window of 2011. Honestly, they did.

Arsenal lodged a bid of £18 million for Downing, as was reported by Sky Sports at the time, but Villa were able to hold out and secure a more lucrative deal with Liverpool for the sale of the winger.

Liverpool paid £20 million to acquire Downing, and his time at Anfield was nigh on a disaster. He was sold to West Ham at a knockdown price in the summer of last year.
