Benfica central defender Jardel deserves a medal of honour following his courageous display during the defeat of V Guimaraes on Monday night, with the Brazilian playing for 84 minutes with a serious head wound.

Jardel clashed with teammate Enzo Perez after only six minutes at the Estadio da Luz and, given Benfica’s injury troubles at centre-back, was required to complete the duration of the encounter.

The 27-year-old was patched up to such an extent that Benfica medics had to force him into a swimming hat in order to stem the bleeding, and it is only now the severity of the injury has emerged.

Pictures have emerged showing the sizeable gash in all its gory glory, with 18 stitches required to repair the damage sustained from the powerful collision.

Jardel’s injury is reminiscent to that sustained by Wayne Rooney earlier this season after the Manchester United striker had taken a boot to the forehead from teammate Chris Smalling.
