Every individual sport has it's prestigious individual award - but how do you differentiate between disciplines and hand out an award to the supposedly most impressive professional athlete in the world?
Well, that is precisely what the Laureus Sports Awards have attempted to do since 2000 with their annual gongs, handing a series of awards for best sportsman, sportswoman, team, comeback, breakthrough, action and disability.
Probably the most high-profile of these are the Sportsman and Sportswoman award, as they are considered to be the leading individuals in world sport and the cult of individual personality in professional sports is something we are very much caught up with.
The Sportsman award has been claimed by stellar names such as Tiger Woods, Michael Schumacher, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Usain Bolt and Rafael Nadal - the latter of the two are also nominees for the 2014 version.
Concentrating on that particular category, we take a look at all six of the nominees for this year. Check out the Laureus Website for the necessary info on the awards and what they do, while you can also see the nominations for the Sportswoman and Best Team awards.
