A 2-0 defeat at the hands of Olympiacos is a disastrous result for Manchester United in any season, not just one as abysmal as this one.
There has been talk of Moyes leaving United recently, following some terrible results.
In recent times it has become the norm to sack a manager following a couple of poor results, just look at Steve Clarke, Michael Laudrup and Paolo di Canio.
Chairman and owners bring in a new manager and there seems to a constant supply of sackings throughout a season. Manchester United must not give into this temptation.
Moyes should be given the time to see out the season. One reason for this is that it takes time to change a team after almost 27 years with one man. A change of culture and playing style will take time.
Another reason Moyes must be given time is that this Manchester United team is one is transition. With ageing players such as Vidic, Ferdinand and Giggs replacements must be brought in and need to fit into the team.
There are also question marks over certain players abilities such as Cleverley, Nani and Ashley Young, to name a few. This has resulted in a squad that needs a season or two to be rebuilt and gel together. The signing of Mata and the contract Rooney signed shows the core of the squad being rebuilt.
A change of manager, right now, would lead to a change in style of football. This would mean more adaption for the team and probably lead to poor results.
Who would replace Moyes? Ferguson? He's enjoying his retirement and a return seems unlikely as a long-term replacement. Conte? Klopp? Enjoying life at Juventus and Borussia Dortmund.
The prospect of no champions league next season and their own squads in prime makes it unlikely they will leave.
The result is that Moyes should stay. With no suitable replacement and a team in transition he must be given time to sign his summer transfer targets and build a new squad.
One bad season in order to build a team that can win for season to come is a necessary loss and Moyes is the chosen one for this. For the time being, United fans must see out the first difficult season in a long time.
