Robin van Persie has lamented the ‘lousy’ season Manchester United have endured, with the club on the verge of being ousted from all cup competitions having already relinquished their Premier League title.
Van Persie had already vented his frustrations at the team’s tactics following Tuesday’s lacklustre defeat to Olympiacos, with the Dutchman unable to take up his more accustomed positions, and he has now further expressed his displeasure.
“We are lousy — in a lousy position in the league, out of the cups and this looks a difficult one also,” Van Persie said, as reported by The Sun.
“We are very disappointed. It’s a tough season.”
The 2-0 defeat in Athens leaves Manchester United in a perilous position in Europe, with a dramatic turn of events required at Old Trafford in the second leg for David Moyes’ side to progress beyond last 16.
Even more infuriating than the result itself was the way Manchester United capitulated against Olympiacos, with a team of established players unable to construct any attacking moves of particular note.
Manchester United face West Brom this weekend, before a potentially crucial encounter with Liverpool the next weekend, with the reverse meeting with Olympiacos to follow.
