Manchester City have joined arch-rivals Manchester United in the race to sign Newcastle's Cheick Tiote, according to the Daily Mail.
Reports suggest Manuel Pellegrini has identified Tiote as the man to bolster his defensive midfield options in the summer.
News of Manchester City's interest in the Ivorian international comes in the same month that it was revealed Manchester United were looking to bring the 27-year-old to Old Trafford.
Red Devils boss David Moyes has also highlighted his midfield as his side's major weakness, so is scouring the transfer market for potential replacements.
Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with making a move for the Newcastle star in the past - but have since signed midfield reinforcements such as Mathieu Flamini and Nemanja Matic respectively.
Pellegrini, on the other hand, has not been too pleased with defensive midfielder Javi Garcia so has drawn up a transfer wish-list including the likes of Tiote, Southampton's Victor Wanyama and Porto's Fernando.
And Tiote is said to be at the top of Pellegrini's transfer plans - but will face a fight with Manchester United to land the Newcastle midfielder.
