Manchester United quoted £24m for ‘new Vieira’

Manchester United have been made aware that Sporting Lisbon are ready to accept a £24m offer for their highly-rated defensive midfielder William Carvalho, according to the Daily Mail.

The 21-year-old has been linked with several of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City, but United boss David Moyes has reportedly identified him as the answer to his side’s midfield problems.

Red Devils’ scouts have provided favourable reports on the Portugal international, having watched him on 12 occasions this season.

Carvalho currently earns just €5,000 a month at Sporting, who will attempt to convince him to stay in Portugal for one more season by offering him a 900 per cent pay increase to €50,000 a month.

However, that wage would still pale in comparison to what United are prepared to offer the player whose performance have led to comparisons with former Arsenal and France midfielder Patrick Vieira.

Moyes was reluctant to meet the €45m release clause in Carvalho’s contract, but news that Sporting are prepared to accept a lower fee could tempt the Scot to make a move as soon as the transfer window re-opens this summer.

Is Carvalho the midfielder Manchester United need? Should the Red Devils be looking elsewhere?
