It's official, David Wright of the New York Mets has been named the 'Face of MLB' in a voting contest that has concluded today.
The third baseman and captain of the Mets beat out Oakland Athletics infielder Eric Sogard.
The voting was done in a unique way with fans getting the opportunity to post the votes via social media.
In essence, the verdict was determined by tweets and retweets by fans who were using the respective hashtags.
Wright wasn't the clear winning through the process, with Sogard actually leading the contest early this morning.
However, with help from a late push of Mets fans, Wright was guided to the top of the pile come the close of play.
Sogard was the man with the cult following but Wright was the deserved winner in the end.
Mets beat writer for MLB.com, Anthony DiComo, explained on Twitter earlier, "David Wright receives a standing ovation in #Mets clubhouse for winning #FaceofMLB. Stands on a chair and delivers brief, poignant speech."
