Southampton v Liverpool: Predicted line-ups

Published Add your comment

Southampton welcome Liverpool to St Mary's for Saturday's evening kick-off in the Premier League, with the visitors looking to keep pace with leaders Chelsea in this year's tightly-contested title race.

The Reds moved six points clear of Tottenham Hotspur following last weekend's 4-3 victory over Swansea City, and will hope to further cement their place in the Champions League qualification places with a positive result against the Saints.

Mauricio Pochettino's side claimed a 1-0 win when they travelled to Anfield earlier in the season, and will be keen to replicate that success by utilising their home advantage this weekend.

Liverpool are in blistering form though, and will provide a stern test for the plucky Saints, with attacking threats from the likes of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling amongst others.

However, the hosts have also been pretty impressive in the final third in 2013/14, and might look to capitalise on the Merseyside club's shaky back line.

Brendan Rodgers has been boosted by the return to full training of Mamadou Sakho and Lucas Leiva this week, but this game against Southampton is expected to come too soon for either player to make a first-team return.

Southampton meanwhile have doubts over defender Jos Hooiveld and midfielder Victor Wanyama, but will be able to call upon all four of their England international stars - Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez and Luke Shaw.

Predicted Southampton line-up:

Boruc; Chambers, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw; Schneiderlin, Cork; Rodriguez, Davis, Lallana; Lambert.

Predicted Liverpool line-up:

Mignolet; Flanagan, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson; Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho; Sterling, Sturridge, Suarez.
