Manchester United will miss out on top target Mats Hummels if they fail to make the Champions League this season, according to the Express.
The German international, who has been on David Moyes’ radar for sometime now, is thought to be keen to remain playing at the highest level possible and, despite the fact reports suggest United are ready to make the Borussia Dortmund star the long-term replacement for Nemanja Vidic, he will reject them if they can’t offer him that.
The reigning Premier League champions find themselves in dire straights this year, and currently sit 11 points away from 4th placed Liverpool.
Their 2-0 loss to Olympiacos in the first-leg of their Champions League second-round tie also puts their future in that competition in jeopardy, and so Moyes is quickly running out of ways through which he can qualify for Europe’s elite stage next season.
Hummels is currently considered to be one of the most competent ball-playing defenders in football, and his addition would be a massive boost to any ambitions United may harbour for next year. However they will undoubtedly face competition for his signature from the likes of Barcelona, who are said to have already held talks with the 25-year-old.
