Manchester United will face competition from Liverpool if they want to land long-term target Nicolas Gaitan, according to talkSPORT.

Reports suggest Liverpool have joined the race to sign Benfica's Argentine international as Brendan Rodgers is keen on adding more strength in depth to his squad.

Manchester United have been keeping tabs on several players based in the Portuguese league - with Gaitan's teammate Ezequiel Garay, William Carvalho and Eliaquim Mangala all said to be on David Moyes' transfer wishlist.

Moyes is expected to be handed a £200million transfer war-chest in the summer - in hope that Manchester United will be able to challenge for the Premier League title once again.

Gaitan, who has been watched on several occasions by Liverpool, may choose to join the Reds as they are likely to qualify for next season's Champions League ahead of Manchester United.

Manchester United or Liverpool will have to fork out at least £16million on the 26-year-old attacking midfielder if they are to land the former Boca Juniors ace.
