Many football fans and players around the world now criticise Mesut Ozil for his below-par impact in Arsenal’s quest to win a major title this season.
Some even joked that Real Madrid sent a trial version of Ozil to Arsenal and that the trial period is over. Mesut is a player of huge calibre. He was bought with a mammoth amount of money and like the saying goes: ‘to whom much is given, much is expected.’
With the presence of Ozil, Arsenal are more of a threat than last season.
However, fans should consider the conditions Ozil played in and the conditions he is playing now.
At Real Madrid, Ozil had extremely good poachers in the likes of Benzema, Higuain and Ronaldo. He had fellow creators too. Modric, Di Maria, Alonso and Khedira to mention but a few, take the pressure off Ozil by providing clear-cut chances and scoring, too.
The case is a little worse at Arsenal. Of course, he has solid midfielders to compliment his efforts but a good goal poacher, that is off the hook.
An assist is recorded for a player who delivers the ball to another player who scores. Prior to the game at Stoke, Ozil has created 73 chances for his teammates. No other player in Europe’s top five leagues had done that this season.
He played in the same vein at Real Madrid. He is much of a provider than a scorer. Hand Mesut a striker like Suarez or Ronaldo and see him better than he is now.
Mesut Ozil is Arsenal’s most expensive player. That fact on its own is a lot of pressure on the midfield maestro. Injuries to Walcott and Ramsey have really affected his prowess in recent times.
Whenever Arsenal are in trouble, everyone looks up to Ozil to save the case. At Real Madrid, he enjoyed less pressure and to be frank, better teammates. Though he needs to up his game if he wants to be a success in the Barclays Premier league, especially in the area of laziness.
Ozil is only powerful when he possesses the ball, he rarely tackles the opponents and that is a big minus as far as the Barclays Premier League is concerned.
Ozil is trying his best as a player. Perhaps his best is not good enough but loss of form is not loss of status.
Like I told football fans when Ozil was bought,:“Suarez would have been a better buy than Ozil. There are players at Arsenal who can do eighty percent or more of Ozil’s work (Ramsey, Cazorla, Wilshere and Rosicky) but there is no one at Arsenal who can produce forty percent of Suarez’s.
It is now crystal clear. Mesut Ozil should be left to play his game. He is a very great player but he is not a messiah.
