Liverpool keen to beat Arsenal to Lopez

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is working hard to bring Marseille playmaker Maxime Lopez to Anfield amid interest from Arsenal, according to the Daily Mail.

The 16-year-old French midfielder is tipped for the very top in Ligue 1, and has had Premier League scouts watching his games closely.

Liverpool and Arsenal officials have been in attendance at Marseille youth games, while Gunners scouts had the opportunity to see him in action against Arsenal twice in the UEFA Youth League earlier this season.

Liverpool invited Lopez to Anfield earlier this season to watch a game with his family, and the youngster reportedly met Rodgers.

The Liverpool boss would have been able to sell the fact he's handed several young players their first-team opportunities at Anfield.

Raheem Sterling has gone from youth team to England starter, while Andre Wisdom, Suso and Jon Flanagan have all played significant first-team minutes under Rodgers.

Lopez is regarded as one of the best players in Europe at his age level, and Premier League clubs have a long history of poaching top youngsters from across the continent before they've made first-team appearances.
