Manchester United scouts have reportedly identified a new long-term defensive target following a trip to Italy last week, with versatile Roma starlet Alessio Romagnoli impressing Red Devils representatives according to Il Messaggero.
Romagnoli made his third senior appearance of the season for Roma in Serie A last weekend, playing at left-back against Inter Milan and keeping a clean sheet in an efficient display.
United were at the Stadio Olimpico to make a personal check on Giallorossi standouts Mehdi Benatia and Miralem Pjanic during the 0-0 draw, but Il Messaggero believe that Romagnoli caught the eye.
The 19-year-old primarily operates in central defence but has deputised at left-back in Roma's last three matches, keeping three successive clean sheets in the process.
United are now ready to make Romagnoli a primary transfer target as they build to successfully rebuild their defence for the long-term particularly now that Nemanja Vidic has confirmed his move to Inter Milan, while the Italian youth international could also prove to Patrice Evra's successor at left-back.
Roma will almost certainly give any approach short shrift though, with Romagnoli very much viewed a pivotal part of the club's plans to build a side that competes in the Champions League consistently.
