The Detroit Red Wings will all be wearing the number 5 jersey for the warm up as a mark of respect tonight.

They will be honouring former player Nicklas Lidstrom by retiring his jersey tonight before the start of the game against Colorado.

The Swedish defenceman played for the Red Wings for 20 seasons, earning the nickname Mr. Perfect.

He holds a number of firsts by being the first European player to captain a Stanley Cup winning team without training in the US, the first European Playoff MVP and in an age where trading is second nature, he is the only European player to play the most games with one team.

He went on to win four Stanley Cups in total over his career, was an NHL all star twelve times and won Olympic Gold with Sweden, something, his country couldn't emulate this past Winter Olympics.

This is all part of Lidstrom night in the NHL, a night honouring his achievements in hockey and to reminisce over a terrific player who could probably still come in and do a great job even now.
