Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has laughed off suggestions that Manchester City were looking to move in after the uncertainty surrounding Lionel Messi and his current situation at Barcelona was slowly revealed.

Messi has not been in tantalising form like usual since he returned from injury, and he and the people upstairs at Barcelona have come to no agreement over contracts. There were prompting suggestions from the Spanish press that City were looking to offer him a way out of the Nou Camp.

Last month, before the Champions League second-round tie between the teams, fellow Argentine Pablo Zabaleta spoke of his friendship with Messi, with the Manchester City full back was captain of the Argentina under-20 side when Messi was brought in. It was Lionel Messi who inspired them to win the youth World Cup in Holland.

Messi was on target when the two sides met at the Etihad in the Champions League and Pellegrini, after being asked about the possibility of securing the world’s greatest player, only took it as one big joke.

‘Just rumours,’ he replied.
