Arsenal's last trophy victory was back in 2005 when Arsene Wenger guided his side to glory in the FA Cup.
This weekend's 4-1 victory over Everton has ensured their passage through to this year's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley and, with Manchester City's shock defeat to Wigan, they are now favourites for the trophy. They are now just two more victories away from finally capturing a
trophy that has proved so elusive in recent years.
The Everton game was in essence a must win game for Arsenal in order to keep their season alive as silverware on any other front looks to be fading fast.
With Manchester City already capturing the League Cup this season Arsenal are facing the unenviable task of overturning a 2-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and now seem to be fading in the chase for the Premier League after setting the early pace.
The 4-1 victory over Everton flattered Arsenal as Everton were competitive throughout the game.
Arsenal have been unable to capture silverware over the past few years as they have been unable to compete with the top teams financially. Since moving from their old ground Highbury, to their new home at the Emirates, Arsenal have had to endure some restrictions on their spending due to having to pay for their new modern ground.
In the long-term Arsenal needed to move stadiums to compete with their big rivals but unfortunately short-term they have had to suffer a lack of trophies as a consequence.
This season looks to be a turning point for The Gunners. The record £42m signing of Mesut Ozil at the beginning of the season looked to signal their intent and perhaps signal the end of the constraints on their spending.
Arsene Wenger has received some unwarranted criticism recently, particularly with his lack of activity in the January transfer market, so a trophy at the end of the season will come as great relief to him and the supporters.
Whether they achieve success this season or not I am sure Arsenal are now heading in the right direction but silverware, for the supporters, is the only true measure of this.
