Michael Bennett, it was confirmed today, has chosen to stick with the Seattle Seahawks, signing a new four-year contract with the reigning Super Bowl champions.
And it seems there was one key factor that persuaded the player to stay with the Seattle team - the 12th man that is the Seahawks fan base.
Bennett took to Twitter in the aftermath of his contract announcement and saved special praise for the supporters:
"I'm back I'm happy super bowl champ. The 12th man is the biggest reason I came back. The best fans," he told followers.
Bennett was a key part of the defensive structure which became such a defining element of the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl push and head coach Phil Carroll will be delighted to have retained his services for the forceable future.
There had been rumors linking the player to the Chicago Bears during free agency but it seems that the Candlestick Park atmosphere was something that Bennett could not live without.
Bennett finished the 2013 regular season with 8.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery as he impressed on his one year deal.
And now the 12th man will be hoping that one of their star men can continue to perform to those levels after helping to bring him back to the franchise.
