Manchester United boss weighs up move for international defender

Manchester United are keeping close tabs on Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia.

The Daily Mail suggest David Moyes wants to sign an experienced defender in the summer to replace Inter Milan-bound Nemanja Vidic.

Moyes stated on Friday that he wanted to give Phil Jones and Chris Smalling the chance to impress him until the end of the season.

The pair started their first ever Premier League game of the season against West Brom on Saturday and managed to shut out Pepe Mel's side.

However Moyes remains keen on strengthening his back-line options ahead of next season as veteran defender Rio Ferdinand is also set to leave Old Trafford in the summer.

Benatia, who joined Roma at the start of the season for a fee believed to be in the region of 13.5million euros, has been extremely impressive this season.

The Morocco international has been part of a Roma defence that have let in just 12 Serie A goals so far this season and has been a goal threat at the other end of the pitch - scoring five goals in 26 games for the Italian outfit.
