La Liga is often called boring because of overwhelming dominance of Real Madrid and Barcelona. This season is different. Atletico Madrid and these two teams are divided by just a few points.
Atletico is the biggest surprise package of this season. Famous for buying great strikers, they have absolutely no problem with scoring goals. 63 goals in 27 matches says enough about them. But, they have to thank only one player for it.
Of course I'm referring to Diego Costa, who Brazil will not have the benefit of fielding at thie summer's World Cup. He has so far scored an impressive 21 goals in 26 matches for the less favoured of the two Madrid clubs.
At Camp Nou, Barcelona are struggling to achieve another championship win. Gerardo Martino's side has been disappointing in their recent performances, losing two out of the last five matches. Valencia surprisingly beat them at their stadium for the first time in 10 years, and last week Valladolid's one goal was enough to beat Los Cules.
Real Madrid, currently sitting top of La Liga, have won four in their last five last matches. Cristiano Ronaldo is the Spanish league's top scorer with 24 goals and in this form he will remain up there until the end. Los Blancos are on a great run, but they've spent too much money on new players. If Atletico can dominate without expensive transfers why couldn't Real?
Last week's Madrid derby was a real treat for both fans. Koke's wonder goal is one of the season's best. He has, unquestionably, shown Vicente del Bosque that he can count on him for the Mundial. It ended up 2-2 and the fight for the trophy will be interesting till the last match of the season.
