Champions League: Best XI since 2000 (8)

Published 37 Comments

Central midfield: Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane was unfortunate to lose two Champions League finals in the 1990s with Juventus, but he landed his hands on a winners’ medal with Real Madrid in 2002.

The Frenchman, who is rightfully regarded as one of the best players of all time, scored the most stunning volley against Bayer Leverkusen in ’02 to secure Real Madrid’s ninth European Cup.

That, by itself, would have been enough to earn Zizou a place in this team. But his tendency to shine bright on the big European nights ultimately earns him a spot in the XI.
