Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has offered to cover a young fan's hefty medical bills after being touched by a public appeal from the sick child's family, according to the Metro.
10-month old Madrid fan Erik Ortiz Cruz needs a brain operation to help ease the affects of cortical dysplasia, a condition which causes the infant to have up to 30 seizures a day.
Cruz's family have been campaigning to raise the £60,000 for the operation, plus an extra £6,000 required each time further testing on the illness is recommended by doctors.
That public drive has proved effective thanks to Ronaldo, who heard about the Madrid fan's plight and according to Spanish newspaper AS has now pledged to donate whatever it takes to get Cruz treated.
Ronaldo will auction off signed kit and other memorabilia to help raise the cash, the latest in a string of charity work carried out by the former Manchester United forward.
Modern footballers are often criticised for spending frivolously but Ronaldo's gesture is a sign that there are still positive stories to be found involving the world's best players and their work off the field.
