Thomas Vermaelen's stock has sharply dropped in the past couple of seasons. The Belgian international is a versatile, experienced defender, but it seems as though not too many at the Emirates would be loathed to lose him.
Vermaelen became the club captain following the departure of Robin van Persie to Manchester United. He has also previously captained Belgium and it is questionable why Arsene Wenger would let him go this summer.
The Belgian lost his place in the side earlier in the season, with a number of defensive errors leading to him being dropped to the bench. Additionally, the form and growing understanding between Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker has meant that Vermaelen has found regaining his place in the team problematic.
As such there is increasing speculation that David Moyes will look towards north London to bolster his side's back line. But question marks remain over why someone surplus to requirements at the Emirates would move to Old Trafford.
Manchester United face a summer of upheaval with a number of experienced stars leaving for various reasons. Vermaelen's versatility to play at left-back as well as his preferred centre-back position means that he could become an asset for Moyes' men. The experience of playing for Arsenal at the highest level and his 47 caps for Belgium show that he has much to offer.
At 28-years-of-age, Vermaelen is coming into his prime years as a defender. To sign a player of this type for a reported £12million fee could be deemed a good piece of business.
Vermaelen has acknowledged the mistakes he has made and has shown his maturity in accepting this publicly. However, Vermaelen showed why he was once so highly regarded, with a solid performance playing at left back marking Arjen Robben, against Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena.
With the departure of Nemanja Vidic to Inter Milan, the Belgian would provide suitable cover and experience at both centre back and left back. If he can regain the sort of form he showed earlier in his Arsenal career, this could be an ideal signing for Manchester United. Perhaps it is time for Vermaelen to move on from Arsenal.
