Wayne Rooney has become the first Premier League player to reach 17 million fans on Facebook, with the official page of the Manchester United striker having grown significantly since he signed a contract extension with the club.
Rooney committed his future until 2019 when he put pen to paper last month, news that was first announced on his Facebook page, with this post receiving over 200,000 likes and more than 6,000 comments, while it was also shared just under 9,000 times.
His last one million fans have come in only 50 days, with a sizeable growth following the new deal, although the day on which Rooney received the most likes came when Manchester United beat West Brom at The Hawthorns.
Rooney received 45,000 net likes as Manchester United strolled to a 3-0 victory, during which the England international scored a header, while there is the expectation that his page will enjoy another notable period of growth during the World Cup this summer.
His official Facebook page has more likes than that of any other player in the England squad, with former captain David Beckham the only British sportsperson to have a higher fan count.
