Creighton basketball star, Doug McDermott has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. To be immortalized on SI is always an honor, but for McDermott it is even special as he is compared to NBA legend Larry Bird.

McDermott features in this week's addition of the popular sports magazine along with the headline: 'College Basketball's secret weapon'. The Creighton star is also pictured with two cheerleaders in the exact same pose as Bird in a 1977 edition.

Of course, Bird went on to a very successful basketball career. He was voted the collegiate player of the year in 1978 and then won three NBA championships, winning two Finals MVP awards.

McDermott, as the headline suggests has been something of a surprise success for the Big East school.

He was a walk-on for Creighton after his father, who coaches the team wanted to create an additional scholarship place. This year he is the captain of the team and a consensus All-American for 2013.

McDermott averages 26 points and seven rebounds a game and has a field goal percentage of over 50%.

It remains to be seen whether McDermott can transfer his high play to the NBA level and if he can continue to draw comparisons to Bird.
