Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez moved up to second on the list of leading Champions League appearance makers after featuring in his 145th game in Wednesday's last-16 second leg clash against Manchester City.

The 34-year-old is behind only Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs on the illustrious list of European greats to have graced Europe's elite club competition on the most occasions.

Xavi completed the full 90 minutes in Barcelona's 2-0 first leg victory at the Etihad Stadium, and also played to the final whistle as Tata Martino's side beat their Premier League opponents 2-1 in the return clash.

The Spain international has cemented his place in second spot after moving above Raul, the retired striker who enjoyed years of success playing for Barcelona's fiercest rivals Real Madrid.

In fact, Xavi is only one of three players still actively playing that feature among the seven leading appearance makers, with Iker Casillas the only man with a chance of surpassing him in the next couple of years.
