Manchester City demonstrated tremendous effort but Barcelona’s breathtaking football secured victory on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
Lionel Messi was outstanding, his goals in both legs undermined critics who say he is not the force he once was.
Pelligrini’s fearless troops emerged into the colossal Nou Camp and attacked the home side. They could not find the devastating touch to put Barcelona under severe pressure.
The tie was concluded when Messi took advantage of an error by Joleon Lescott by chipping the ball past a defeated Joe Hart.
Both clubs deserve an abundance of credit. Criticism of Barcelona and suggestions of them having no chance of winning the Champions League is poor judgement. Any team who can create chances like them and have a threat in Messi has an opportunity.
The slick Spanish outfit are four points off La Liga leaders Real Madrid but there are inevitably twists and turns to come.
City have endured a miserable period despite winning the Capital One Cup. Being beaten by Wigan in the FA Cup and crashing out of Europe has inflicting wounds.
But with Vincent Kompany as your captain and the phenomenal players they have, winning the premier league is possible.
The future is bright for these footballing giants. City will be a beast to fear in Europe in the coming years. And Barcelona with their supposed “ageing squad” will continue to play sublime football and produce young talent to once again experience dominating success.
Just wait. Enjoy the wonderfully entertaining football these two teams exhibit. Be grateful to be witnessing the sensational players in both sides play live in our life time. Both of these clubs will achieve Champion’s League success soon.
