Manchester United have joined the race to sign Real Madrid’s 21-year-old forward Alvaro Morata, according to reports.

Arsenal had been linked with a loan deal for him in January, but were unable to agree on terms with Madrid due to their reluctance to lose another forward after the summer departure of Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli.

The bid also failed as Arsenal were more interested in signing him on a permanent basis, rather than temporary.

Tim Sherwood is also interested in taking him to Tottenham Hotspur, as despite the impressive form of Emmanuel Adebayor he is yet to be wholly convinced by the club’s last Spanish import, Roberto Soldado.

And now sources in Spain have pinpointed the form of youngster Jese and Karim Benzema as reason for Madrid's willingness to let him go – with his contract set to expire in 2015.

Morata has scored 13 goals in just 12 games for the Spanish U21 side, requiring just one more to become the highest goalscorer in the team’s history at that level.

Contrastingly, he has netted just three times in 21 games for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this term, having been forced to play second fiddle to the likes of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

David Moyes could see him as a potential successor to Robin van Persie, who has been linked with the Old Trafford exit in recent weeks, with former club Arsenal keen on a reunion.
