The riveting and rambunctious ride of the Steve Smith era in Carolina is over.

After 13 seasons as a part of the Panther locker room, the all-time leading receiver in Carolina history has been cut by the franchise on Thursday.

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said that the release of Steve Smith: "was not an easy decision"

The 34-year-old wide receiver said upon being released from the organisation that it had: ""awoke a sleeping giant" inside of him.

Carolina had looked to trade the ageing receiver as he was set to cost the franchise $7 million towards this years salary cap, upon failing to find a trade they decided to release one of the teams biggest leaders.

The five time pro bowler took to twitter to release his emotions on the matter, he tweeted saying: "I will always be a Carolina panther No contract can ever change that CLT is my home and will always be my home... I love you #panthernation"

Shortly after he reminded the league that he wasn't done with his career after being cut: "But I still have a lil bit of football left in me.... #agent89 Out. #iceupson"

The brilliant hashtag that is #Iceupson has NFL fans everywhere reminiscing on Smith's ability to trash talk and the personality of the man behind the helmet.

If you need reminding of the meaning behind the hashtag, here it is.

Keep an eye out for the next landing spot for Steve Smith as I'm sure the wide receiver will make an impact at any franchise willing to take a chance on him.
